Swimming Awards

We use Swim England's Learn to Swim Programme, which is the leading national teaching syllabus for delivering safe, inclusive and effective swimming lessons for all ages.

With a bright range of badges and certificates, the Programme provides motivation and support for children at every level – from their first splash to gaining their enhanced swimming skills.

Pre-School Framework

Perfect for pre-school children, building the beginnings of a life-long love of water.

Duckling Awards

Duckling Awards are the next step on from the Discovery Duckling Awards.

They are designed to help toddlers enjoy learning to swim with help from their parents or guardians.

With Duckling Awards your child can work towards four different colourful Awards. Each Award has its own certificate and badge.

Duckling 1 will see children start to move by themselves in the water.

By Duckling 4 they will be jumping in, going underwater, floating and travel 10 metres without support.

Duckling Awards are great at promoting increased independence and water confidence to help prepare for Stage 1 of the Learn to Swim Framework.

Learn to Swim Framework

Ideal for children aged four through to 11, developing confident and competent swimmers through fun and enjoyment.

The Learn to Swim Stage 1-7 Awards are divided into progressive stages. They make up the core, national syllabus of learning to swim for primary school aged children.

They are designed to reward your child for their development of the essential aquatic skills they need to be confident, competent and safe in the water.

Each of the Learn to Swim Stage 1-7 Awards has a list of clear outcomes that need to be completed in order to gain each Award.

Swimming Award - Learn to Swim 1-7

Complementary Awards

Complementary Awards keep learners enjoying their swimming whilst they progress  through the Learn to Swim Programme.

These can be achieved alongside the core Awards in each Framework to reward smaller steps or demonstrate achievement of new skills. Here you will find information on our complementary Awards and the next steps learners can take after achieving their Awards

Adult & Child Award

The Swim England Adult and Child Award helps both you as the supporting adult and your child to enjoy swimming in safety and with confidence.

It rewards you with a certificate on achievement of six practical skills as well as completion of a short, written test on your knowledge of water safety, handling and support.

All six practical skills must be passed to achieve the Swim England Adult and Child Award and may be accumulated over a number of sessions.

A minimum of four of the questions need to be completed correctly.

Rainbow Distance Awards

The Rainbow Distance Awards (including Puffin Award) are aimed at swimmers of five years and older and are designed to demonstrate the pupils’ ability to swim from A to B without pause and without stress.

They are a great way to give swimmers the incentive to develop their swimming abilities and stamina by gradually increasing the distance they can swim.

Water Safety Awards

There are three Water Safety Awards teaching water danger awareness, self-rescue techniques and vital survival skills in clothes, without swimming goggles.

Water Skills Awards

The Swim England Water Skills Awards support intensive activity programmes and reward your child for successfully developing water skills skills across six grading levels. The six Awards are represented by six colour-coded certificates and accompanying badges and focus on confidence, versatility, skills and endurance.

Swimming Challenge Awards

Swim England Swimming Challenge Awards are for young people working towards the latter stages of Learn to Swim Stages 1-7 or Learn to Swim Stages 8-10 of the Aquatic Skills Framework, with Bronze, Silver, Gold and Honours Awards available.

Your children will be challenged to develop a wide range of skills and stamina in order to achieve the Awards, with a focus on good stroke style.

Adult Distance Awards

The Swim England Adult Distance Awards can be gained by achieving 5 metres, 10 metres, 25 metres, 50 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres, 800 metres and 1 mile.

Designed to provide motivational milestones for swimmers who enjoy lane swimming, these Awards offer swimmers a clear target to achieve.

Alpha Step Awards

The Alpha Step Awards are designed to build confidence in those who may need additional support during their swimming lessons.

They are particularly relevant for a shy/timid child, a nervous adult and some individuals with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

The Alpha Step Awards reward the development of the early stages of buoyancy, coordination, spatial awareness, breathing, and entering and leaving the pool safely.

The basic water skills and confidence gained through these Awards enable a smooth transition to Learn to Swim Stage 1 Award of the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework.
